Internet job portals are happening places for job seekers. The Internet offers hundreds of places employers can post their job ads.

According to hitwise, CareerBuilder.com was the most visited website, followed by Monster.com and Yahoo! HotJobs.

Yahoo! launched REAL algorithm to make few differentiator in this already over crowded job portal markets and trying to increase their market share.

According to the Yahoo!,

“R.E.A.L. is an industry-first search algorithm that builds on an innovative set of principles derived from Yahoo!’s research in Web search technology”.

So, how REAL works?

R - Relevance: if someone lists “business analyst” as job description, REAL algorithm will look this keyword to find suitable candidates. But, existing job search algorithms already using this technique.

E - Engagement: It determines how well candidates respond to the job listing. Therefore next time consulting firms ask you for few updates in your online resume be sure to respond. Otherwise your CV will be ranked lower.

A - Availability: Determining whether the positions displayed are still unfilled or not. This is a good feature for real. Most of the Jobs consultancy firms irritate candidates asking for resume for a position, already filled.

L - Location: Showing jobs in a location of interest to the candidate.

These four characteristics are part of an insights-driven search algorithm that will continually improve on itself. It seems “Engagement” and “Availability” is two important differentiators for REAL. According to Yahoo, they have increased candidate traffic by more than 50% since the launch of REAL algorithm.

Despite lots of efforts from various parts there are plenty of problems with online job portals?

  • Spam Mails: Whenever a candidate list his/her resume, mailbox will flooded with numerous mails, most of them can easily be qualified as spam. Consultancy firms randomly pick up email addresses from job sites and broadcast irrelevant jobs requirements. There is hardly any option in job portals to block the third party agencies to send candidate irreverent mails.

  • Date based ranking: Traditional job search algorithms ranked a CV based on the modification date. Within few hours of modifications, your mobile will start ringing. Consultants will ask you every possible question on earth, which sometimes irritated prospective job seekers.
  • Third Party: When you list your CV, 90% of the time it won’t go to the firms directly. Sometimes these agencies modify candidates CV to generate a possible interview call from the firms.
  • Fake Resume: E-job portals are flooded with fake résumés. It is very difficult to identify the quality candidates from the fake one from online resume.
